Bloedel Conservatory Bloedel Conservatory's future is looking brighter

UPDATE

The Bloedel Conservatory has been granted a new lease on life. Aaron Jasper, Vision's parks board commissioner announced on July 8th, that the Vancouver Parks Board will the attraction, located in Queen Elizabeth Park between Ontario Street and Cambie Street. At this time, it is uncertain who will take over the Conservatory. The Board is currently hearing two financial proposals on July 20th outlining revitalization plans for the aging but much loved dome.

The Friends of the Bloedel presented a report on expressions of interest for the Conservatory. The dome, which houses a spectacular array of exotic plants, fish and birds, is in peril of disappearing due to budget cuts. The meeting took place at 2099 Beach Avenue on July 8, 6:30 p.m.

The Conservatory is a Vancouver icon, and has been an attraction of the Riley Park-Little Mountain neighbourhood since 1969. The number of annual visitors had decreased to 70,000 visitors last year from 250,000 in the 80s. The decline was due to a combination of renovations and to the Canada Line construction, which slowed traffic along Cambie Street for an extended period of time in 2009.
